Fábrica de Agua: A Park of Renewal
Fábrica del Agua is a civic and ecological catalyst located in Barrio Norte, Alcaldía Álvaro Obregón, Mexico City. Designed by Multiplicities, the project transforms what was once the neighborhood’s dumping ground into a new zócalo—a shared center where water, community, and landscape come together. Grounded in principles of sustainability, social equity, and environmental justice, the project restores water as a common good and a driver of urban life.
At its core, Fábrica del Agua focuses on the recovery of the Río Becerra, purifying and managing water through natural systems such as biofilters, rain gardens, and solar-supported infrastructure.
A continuous boardwalk surrounds the existing Presa C, integrating a running track, bike lanes, and pedestrian paths with observation points that frame a regenerated ecosystem. Native vegetation—including traditional milpa species—returns alongside local fauna such as cacomixtles, tlacuaches, and birds, reestablishing ecological continuity within the city.
The project weaves environmental restoration with inclusive social infrastructure: a Trash Café, strategically placed recycling centers, a public library and coworking space, an LGBTQI+ Rights Center, a Women’s Center dedicated to family protection, playgrounds, multi-use sports courts, a boxing gym, and medical & dental facilities.
Conceived as an alternative mobility hub and a daily gathering place, Fábrica del Agua demonstrates that cleaning water can also heal territory and community.
In the stillness, there is renewal. In the soil, there is life. In each breath, there is the possibility of a new beginning.
We are water.
